About the Author
Rahawa Haile is an Eritrean-American writer whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Outside, Best American Travel Writing, and elsewhere. Her Outside feature about thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail was one of the magazine’s most-read pieces of 2017 and was selected by Longreads as among the year’s best essays and best political writing. Born in the United States to Eritrean refugees, Haile writes at the intersection of migration, race, environment, and history. In Open Country is her first book, and she currently resides in Oakland, CA.
