About the Author
As the granddaughter of Eastern European Jewish immigrants—some of whom came through the Netherlands—Susan B. Katz is deeply dedicated to keeping Holocaust stories alive. Katz is an award-winning, bestselling, bilingual author of more than 80 books. Her body of work includes the biographies The Story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (an Amazon bestseller at #18 overall and #9 among all kids’ books) and Gaudí: Architect of Imagination (a Junior Library Guild award winner.) Several of Ms. Katz’s other titles have garnered: the International Book Award, Moonbeam Gold, starred reviews from School Library Journal, Amazon Editor’s Best Books selection, a spot on the Bank Street Book List, and a National Parent Product Award Seal. Esther Shaya is the author of two prior books, both published exclusively in Dutch—Harry & Sieny: Overleven in verzet en liefde [Harry & Sieny: Surviving in Resistance and Love] and Wacht maar: Het veelbewogen leven van Henriëtte Pimentel [Just Wait: The Heroic Life of Henriëtte Pimentel]. Since 2015, Shaya has been a board member, editor, and author for the Stichting Joodse Huizen (Jewish Houses Foundation), which published one book each year on prewar stories about the Jewish community in the Netherlands from 2014 until 2024. Shaya has been interviewed on national radio and TV and has been a guest speaker about Henriëtte Pimentel’s daycare center numerous times in the Netherlands, the United States, and Australia. She lives in Amsterdam.
